Okmulgee City Council members took a big step in working to preserve one of our city’s historical landmarks when they voted to donate $5,000 to the oldest Black hospital in Oklahoma. Mayor Mickey Baldwin (left) and City Manager Rick Pearson (right) were on-site Wednesday to deliver the check to Leman Lewis (center), who has advocated for the preservation of the building and its history for several years. The hospital, which operated from 1924 to 1957, was one of the only places for black Okmulgeeans to receive healthcare. Through his nonprofit, Landmark for all Generations, Lewis works in hopes that these restorations will help the facility regain some of its prior importance within the community.
