OPS releases fall schedules
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Fastpitch softball to kick off action Aug. 7

The 2023 fall sports season for Okmulgee Public Schools will get underway this Monday (Aug. 7) with the high school fastpitch softball season opener at home against the Heavener Lady Wolves.

Besides high school fastpitch softball, the other sports programs at OPS this Fall are junior high fastpitch softball, high school and junior high football, and high school and junior high cross country.

The junior high fastpitch softball team will open the 2023 campaign on August 21 at home against the Vian Lady Wolverines.

The cross country programs at OPS will begin their 2023 season August 19 at Holdenville, while the high school football team will kick off its 2023 campaign six days later (Aug. 25) at home against OKC Star Spencer in a ‘Zero Week’ contest.

The junior high football team will be the final fall sports program at Okmulgee to begin its season, opening 2023 September 5 at home against county rival Henryetta.

In high school fastpitch softball, the Lady Bulldogs will compete in District 3A-8, along with county foe Henryetta, as well as Heavener, Eufaula, Roland, Spiro, and Vian.

The Okmulgee diamond squad will battle the Lady Knights in district action in an 8-day period, hosting Henryetta August 14 and traveling to Henryetta on August 22 to complete the home-and-home district showdown.

Monday’s season opener against Heavener will be a district doubleheader with the Lady Wolverines, while the Lady Bulldogs will also battle Spiro (Sept. 9) and Roland (Sept. 12) in district doubleheader action with both contests taking place at their opponents’ home field. The Okmulgee ladies will host Vian in district action on August 21, then will travel to the Lady Wolverines’ home field eight days later (Aug. 29) for the district finale with their Sequoyah County opponents.

The final district action for the Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs in 2023 will come against the Eufaula Lady Ironheads. The Lady Bulldogs will host their McIntosh County foes August 28, then travel to Eufaula one week later (Sept. 5) to conclude the home-andhome district schedule with the Lady Ironheads.

Other home games for the Lady Bulldogs in 2023 will come against Keys (Aug. 24), Webbers Falls (Sept. 7), Tulsa Edison (Sept. 11), and Liberty (Mounds) (Sept. 18).

Besides the road district contests, the other regular- season trips this season will be to Liberty (Mounds) (Aug. 8), Tulsa Edison (Aug. 9), Webbers Falls (Aug. 31), Bishop Kelley (Sept. 14), and Wetumka (Sept. 19).

The Lady Bulldogs will also compete in two tournaments in 2023 – the Gore Tournament August 1012 and the Okmulgee Tournament August 17-19.

The Okmulgee fastpitch sofbtall team can earn a trip to the postseason in 2023 if they finish in the Top 4 in the 3A-8 standings.

If the Lady Bulldogs are able to punch their ticket to the playoffs this season, they will begin postseason play with the Class 3A regional tournament, which is set to take place September 21 and 22, followed by the super regional tournaments September 28 and 29 and the state tournaments October 5-7.

The regular-season schedule for the Okmulgee cross country program will be the same for both high school and junior high. Following the season opener at Holdenville, the Bulldog and Lady Bulldog runners will also travel to Okemah (Sept. 2), Wilburton (Sept. 9), Tahlequah Sequoyah (Sept. 16), Holdenville (Sept. 23), and Checotah (Oct. 3) in 2023, while holding its lone home meet on September 19.

The final meet for the junior high cross country program this season will be October 3 at Checotah, while the high school program will get an opportunity to (possibly) compete at two postseason meets in 2023 – the regional meet on October 21 and the state meet on October 28.

Besides the season opener August 25 against Star Spencer, the other regular-season home games for the high school football team in 2023 will be September 8 against Tulsa Central, September 29 against Westville, October 6 against Kiefer, October 20 against Kansas, and October 27 against Sperry.

The four regular-season road games for the Bulldogs in 2023 will be September 1 at Antlers, September 22 at Victory Christian, October 12 at Beggs, and November 3 at Morris.

After the September 5 season opener at home against Henryetta, the other junior high football games in 2023 for Okmulgee will be September 11 at Sapulpa, September 25 at Okemah, October 2 at Morris, October 9 at Mounds, and October 16 at home against Beggs. The junior high squad also has an open date on September 18 that had not been filled as of presstime.

For the Okmulgee junior high fastpitch softball team in 2023, the home games this season following the August 21 season opener will be August 24 against Keys, September 7 against Webbers Falls, and September 18 against Liberty (Mounds). The road games for the Lady Bulldogs junior high diamond squad will be August 29 at Vian, August 31 at Webbers Falls, and September 19 at Wetumka.
