Henryetta announces 2023 fall sports schedules
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Lady Knight softball to begin season Aug. 7 at home

The athletics department at Henryetta Public Schools recently released the 2023 schedules for its three fall sports programs – fastpitch softball, football and cross country. All three programs will compete at both the high school and junior high levels in 2023.

The first HPS fall sports program to begin their regular-season schedule in 2023 will be the high school fastpitch softball squad. The Lady Knight diamond squad will kick off its 2023 campaign this Monday (Aug. 7) at home against the Vian Lady Wolverines.

Monday’s season opener against Vian will also be the district opener for the Henryetta squad, as the Lady Knights will compete in District 3A-8, along with county foe Okmulgee, as well as Heavener, Eufaula, Roland, and Spiro.

The Lady Knights will complete the home-andhome district schedule with Vian on September 12 with a trip to the Lady Wolverines’ home field.

Besides Monday’s season opener against Vian, the other home district contests are scheduled to take place August 22 against Okmulgee, August 24 against Spiro, August 29 against Heavener, September 5 against Roland, and September 14 against Eufaula.

The first road district game for the Henryetta high school fastpitch softball team will be August 8 at Spiro. The other road district contests this season for the Lady Knights will be August 14 at Okmulgee, August 21 at Heavener, August 28 at Roland, and September 11 at Eufaula.

The Lady Knights’ non-district regular-season schedule this season will feature an August 15 road trip to Preston for a county battle with the Preston Lady Pirates and home dates against Davenport (Aug. 31) and Okemah (Sept. 25). The Henryetta diamond squad will also host Kellyville and Panama in a 3-team showdown on August 26.

The Lady Knights are scheduled to compete in three tournaments this season, beginning with the Cushing Tournament August 10-12. The other regular-season tournaments for Henryetta in 2023 are the Kiowa/Stuart Tournament August 17-19 and the Silo Tournament September 7-9.

The Henryetta fastpitch softall team can earn a trip to the postseason in 2023 if they finish in the Top 4 in the 3A-8 standings.

If the Lady Knights are able to punch their ticket to the playoffs this season, they will begin postseason play with the Class 3A regional tournament, which is set to take place September 21 and 22, followed by the super regional tournaments September 28 and 29 and the state tournaments October 5-7.

The Henryetta junior high fastpitch softball team will begin its 2023 campaign at the Bristow Tournament August 10-12. The first home game for the HMS diamond squad will take place August 14 against Oktaha.

The other regular-season home games for the junior high fastpitch softball team in 2023 will be August 17 against Holdenville, August 21 against Kellyville, and September 11 against Eufaula, while the other regular-season road games will be August 22 at Eufaula, August 31 at Okataha, September 5 at Kellyville, September 7 at Holdenville, and September 14 at McAlester.

The Henryetta junior high diamond squad will also compete at the Oktaha Tournament on August 19 and the Henryetta Festival and Haskell Festival on August 25 and September 9, respectively.

The Henryetta cross country program will get underway August 19 at Holdenville. The season-opening meet will feature both high school and junior high teams.

The other joint meets for the cross country program in 2023 will be Tahlequah Sequoyah (Aug. 26), Okemah (Sept. 2), Henryetta (Sept. 9), North Rock Creek (Sept. 16), and Checotah (Oct. 3). The high school cross country teams will also compete at Edmond Santa Fe on September 23 and Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee on October 5.

The junior high cross country schedule will conclude with the Checotah meet, while the high school teams will get an opportunity to (possibly) compete at two postseason meets in 2023 – the regional meet on October 21 and the state meet on October 28.

The regular-season schedules for the Henryetta football programs will get started August 25 (high school) and September 5 (junior high), respectively.

The high school football team will open 2023 during ‘Zero Week’ at home against the Hartshorne Miners. The other regular-season home games for the Knight varsity gridiron squad in 2023 will be September 1 against Victory Christian, September 22 against Prague, October 6 against Warner, and October 27 against Roland.

The road games for the Knight varsity football program this season will be September 8 at Morris, September 29 at Tahlequah Sequoyah, October 12 at Vian, October 20 at Okemah, and November 3 at Keys.

After the season-opening trip to Okmulgee for a county battle with the Okmulgee Bulldogs, the Henryetta junior high football team will host county rivals Morris and Beggs in back-to-back home games September 11 and 18, respectively, then travel for the first time in 2023 on September 25 with a trip to Mounds.

The remaining regular-season games for the HMS gridiron squad this season will be at home against Eufaula (Oct. 2) and Okemah (Oct. 23) and at Warner (Oct. 9) and Liberty (Mounds) (Oct. 16).
