Dragons Scorch Competition in 2022
By LARRY OWEN SPORTS EDITOR

Dewar football enjoys 13th-straight winning season; 10th-straight playoff berth

The Dewar Dragon varsity football team continued to find success on the field in 2022.

The Dragons finished 2022 with an 11-1 record – their 13th-straight winning season – and reached the postseason for a 10th-straight time with a spotless regular-season record.

The Dewar gridiron squad also continued a pair of regular-season streaks last season, winning 30-straight district games, as well as 44-straight regular-season contests. The last district loss for Dewar came October 28, 2016, against the Weleetka Outlaws by a 46-8 margin with the last regular-season loss coming September 28, 2018, against the Davenport Bulldogs by a 50-38 margin.

Along with continuing the two regular- season win streaks, the Dragons also captured their sixth-straight (30th overall) district championship in 2022 with a spotless 5-0 record.

Of the Dragons’ 11 wins last season, all but one came on the 45-point Mercy Rule. The lone non-Mercy Rule victory for Dewar in 2022 was a 15-0 forfeit win in Week 9 against Midway.

The last non-winning season for the Dragons came in 2009, when they finished 2-8 overall in their second of a 2-year pact to compete in Class A and 11-man football. Starting in 2010, the Dewar gridiron squad returned to 8-man football and have only missed the playoffs once (2012) since making the return to Class B.

In 2022, the Dragons stepped on the field a total of eight times, winning each contest by an average of 48 points with six of the eight regular- season Mercy Rule wins ending in the third quarter.

During the 2022 campaign, the Dewar squad outscored their opponents by a margin of 605-178 – an average of 50.4-14.8 ppg. The Dragons outscored their four non-district opponents 212-20 – an average of 53.05.0 ppg – and outscored their district foes 247-40 (including a 15-0 forfeit win over Midway) – an average of 30.9-8.0 ppg.

The Dragons opened the 2022 season on September 2 on the road at Cherokee. The Dewar squad earned its 9th-straight season-opening win, blanking the host Chiefs 48-0.

The second non-district contest for Dewar in 2022 was originally scheduled to be the annual meeting with the Weleetka Outlaws. For an unknown reason, the Outlaws decided to pull out of the scheduled Week 2 meeting, leaving the Dragons searching for a suitable replacement.

After a lengthy search, the replacement for the September 9 home game was scheduled to be the Spring Hill Bears, out of Hope, Arkansas.

Following a school board meeting at Spring Hill High School, the administrators of the Arkansas school decided to cancel the Week 2 contest, leaving the Dragons without an opponent.

After the Week 2 ‘Bye Week’, the Dragons returned to the gridiron on September 16, traveling to Depew for a non-district showdown with the Depew Hornets. The Dewar squad improved to 2-0 on the young season, defeating the host Hornets by a 60-12 margin.

On September 23, 2022, the Dewar squad officially opened the home portion of their regular-season schedule, hosting the Arkoma Mustangs in a non-district battle at historic Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium. The Dragons earned their third-straight win of the 2022 campaign in the home opener with a 58-8 rout of the visiting Mustangs.

Dewar closed out its non-district schedule the following week (September 30) against Velma-Alma on the Comets’ home field. The Dragons entered district play with a spotless 4-0 record by blanking the host Comets by a 46-0 margin.

Dewar’s journey towards a 6thstraight district crown began October 7 in Webbers Falls against the host Webbers Falls Warriors.

The Dragons began district play on a winning note, defeating the host Warriors by a 52-6 margin. The district- opening win improved Dewar’s season record to 5-0.

The Dragons continued their dominance on the football field in 2022 by winning their next two district contests – at home against Porum and at Quinton – by a combined 11820 margin on back-to-back Thursday games. Dewar routed Porum 56-6 on October 13, then walked off the Quinton football field on October 20 with a 62-14 decision to sit at 3-0 in district play and 7-0 overall.

The Dewar gridiron squad was scheduled to host the Midway Chargers in a District B-5 showdown on October 28, but the district meeting was canceled by the Chargers for an unknown reason on October 24, resulting in a Dragons’ (15-0 forfeit) victory without even stepping onto the football field. The forfeit win also awarded the Dewar squad its 10th-straight postseason berth and 41st overall.

The Dragons put the finishing touches on their fourth-straight perfect regular season on November 3 with a 62-14 victory over the Caddo Bruins at Dr. Ted Lewis Stadium in Dewar. The win over Caddo gave the Dewar squad its sixth-straight district championship (30th overall) and a possible two-consecutive playoff home games.

On November 11, the Dragons opened postseason play at home against the Gans Grizzlies, who finished fourth in the B-6 district standings. The Dewar squad put the opening-round contest away in the first 12 minutes of action, scoring an outstanding 70 points in the first quarter, including the first 35 points of the contest.

The scoring barrage allowed the Dragons to advance to the second round with a 78-20 victory in a contest that ended on the 45-point Mercy Rule at halftime.

In the second round of the Class B playoffs, the Dragons hosted the Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Mustangs, who advanced with a 40-6, opening-round, win over Davenport.

Dewar found the Mustangs to be a formidable opponent in the second-round battle with the Dragons holding off the visitors by a 68-52 decision in a game that was not fully decided until the final minutes of regulation.

The win over Pioneer-Pleasant Vale earned the Dragons a sixth-straight quarterfinal appearance and a showdown with the second-ranked – and unbeaten – Oklahoma Bible Academy Trojans.

In the quarterfinal matchup, the Dragons had their bid for a second state football championship fall by the wayside, suffering a 46-0 loss to the second- ranked Trojans.

The shutout loss in the quarterfinal round snapped an 84-game scoring streak for the Dewar squad with the last shutout loss coming September 30, 2016, in a 46-0 loss to Davenport and was the first Mercy Rule setback for the Dragons since losing to Shattuck in the 2018 quarterfinals by a 67-20 margin – a span of 53 games.

The Dragons will look to extend their regular-season win streak on September 1 at home against the Cherokee Chiefs in the 2023 season opener, while also seeking to extend three other streaks – district, playoff, and district championship in 2023.
