I was recently talking with a priest friend of mine about the priesthood and our experiences of it - the joys and the struggles, the disappointments and the surprises. And one of the struggles and disappointments we both mentioned was the illiteracy of disciples. Meaning what? Meaning there’s a whole host of people who don’t seem to have content to their faith. Maybe we never learned what the faith taught. Maybe we forgot it. Maybe we didn’t know where to look. What has taken place in recent weeks, months, even years only highlights the illiteracy of disciples. Just look at any catholic politician or secular public figure and the rational that is given to any number of their positions: Faith; belief in Jesus. And yet somehow Jesus’ words in the gospel don’t seem to be remembered.
