Knights finish 6th at 38th Annual Dewar baseball tournament

The Dewar Dragon varsity baseball team defended their Joe Fowler Gumbo Classic crown this past Saturday with an 11-2 thrashing of the Eufaula Ironheads in the championship game of the 38th annual version of the Dewar tournament.

The Dragons, ranked third in Class A, began their journey towards a second-consecutive Gumbo Classic title last Thursday with a 7-0 victory over the Central Sallisaw Tigers.

The Dewar squad punched their ticket to Saturday’s title game on Friday with a 22-0 rout of the Allen Mustangs in semifinal action.

The Henryetta Golden Knights also took part in the annual Dewar baseball tournament, finishing sixth overall at the 3-day event.

The Knights began their tournament participation Friday with a hard-fought 6-4 win over the Weleetka Outlaws. The win over Weleetka was also the first victory for the Henryetta diamond squad in 2023, snapping a 7-game losing streak.

The win streak was shortlived, as the Knights fell into the loser’s bracket side of the tournament following a 9-0 loss to Eufaula Friday evening.

The Henryetta diamond squad rebounded from the shutout loss to edge Regent Prep by a 10-9 margin in Saturday’s loser’s bracket contest, then ended their tournament participation with a 10-0 setback to Central Sallisaw Saturday night.
