Substance abuse, misuse, and addiction rates vary by gender. This includes marijuana use. Data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) reveals marijuana use is the most common substance for women and girls twelve years of age and older. Almost 15% of females report marijuana use in the past year, which is 21 million people. This is almost two times more than the next reported illegal drug usage, which is psychotherapeutic drugs at 5.5%. According to the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC), while men still have a higher rate of marijuana use, new female users are growing at a greater rate than males. From 2020 to 2021, male new users increased by 49% while female new users increased by 55%.
