A nearly 100-year-old airplane made a stop last week in Okmulgee during a tour of the country. The 1928 Ford Tri-Motor marked the beginning of commercial flight in the 1920s. Nicknamed the “Tin Goose,” it was America’s first mass-produced airliner. It is completely metal on the outside, looks like a train on the inside, seats 10 passengers, and has three engines. Ed Kornfield has been the pilot of the aircraft for the last four years. There are only four of the planes still operational. Kornfield is part of a team of volunteers with the Experimental Aircraft Association, touring with the historic plane, which is based in Oshkosh, Wisc. Tours of the plane were given during it’s four-day stop in Okmulgee and many took a short ride on the plane around Okmulgee. Covington Aircraft Engines of Okmulgee works on the plane engines.
